You’ve probably been asked before “what’s your passion?”
Often times the expectation is that what we are passionate about is also what we are working on. While this might true, I believe our passions aren’t finite, but ever-evolving. My opinion is that life is about constantly exploring new areas of passion, growing out of old ones, and evolving even more into the passions that have been there since the very beginning. However, I feel like in a world where we are constantly moving, consuming, and connecting, the noise drowns out any space for us to explore new passions.
When the noise is absent and it’s just you, you give yourself the space to wander and explore the possibilities you previously didn’t have the energy to. One of the ways I believe you can truly think with a clear and new perspective is through travel.
When you travel, you don’t have your usual coffee shop, your regular commute to work, your typical nightly routine, or your go-to snack. Everything is different, but most importantly your small daily habits that are typically on autopilot, have gone out the window. You’re somewhere new. You have to plan where to have your morning coffee, where you’ll work, what to grab for dinner, and so much more. Because we are so used to being on auto-pilot, traveling forces us out of our usual routine and therefore forces us to think differently.
It sounds so minuscule, but it’s because we are so used to going about our day-to-day in almost the same way, that when we change up our basic daily habits while being in a brand new setting, our thoughts are different. Rather than being on auto-pilot and getting out of bed to turn on the coffee pot, rather you’re walking to the next-door cafe to order an espresso in a language you can barely get by with. Your thoughts will inevitably be different.
When our thoughts are different, new ideas sprout. You may see a different way of life when your traveling and wonder why you don’t do that. Or you may be more willing to take a risk on trying out a new adventure and realize you love it. You may be a big city kind of person traveling in a more remote mountainous town and realize you want to be more involved in your own local community. When we travel, we think differently, we form new ideas, and from that, we discover new passions.
We are not meant to just have the same passions throughout our entire lives. Traveling and getting out of our daily routine and experiencing different thought patterns, helps us discover those new passions.
